Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesThe Dow Jones news ticker in Times Square, New York City. NEW YORK -- Investment bank Goldman Sachs Group (GS), credit-card company Visa (V), and footwear Nike (NKE) will join the blue chip Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) Dow Jones industrial average, the index managers said Tuesday, in the biggest shake-up for the 30-stock average in nearly a decade. The three companies will replace Bank of America (BAC), Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) and Alcoa (AA), all lower-priced stocks that exert a lesser pull on the price-weighted index. The changes will be effective on Sept. 23, S&P Dow Jones Indices said in a statement. The average, first established in 1896, includes 30 stocks, but very little money is indexed to its performance, unlike the broader Standard & Poor's 500 (^GSPC) or other indexes. In addition, because it is weighted by price, companies that are smaller in value with higher prices have more influence on the average. "Wow, those are big changes," said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment officer of Solaris Group in Bedford Hills, N.Y. "The Dow is really an antiquated index. It is price-weighted, which makes no sense. But there are still are some people that pay attention to it, and some technicians, so it has an influence on some people." Google (GOOG) and other names were considered for inclusion but passed over because of high stock prices, David Blitzer, managing director and chairman of the S&P Index Committee, told CNBC. The index manager said the changes were prompted by the low stock price of the three companies slated for removal and a desire to diversify the make-up of the index. Alcoa, in particular, has been seen as a candidate for elimination for some time, as the stock's market value of $8.5 billion is easily the lowest in the average. It is the first three-for-three change to the index since April 8, 2004, when American International Group (AIG), Pfizer (PFE) and Verizon (VZ) replaced AT&

The issue has been simmering for a few years now, really ever since aluminum came off its highs of 2006 and 2007. As banks were allowed to get into the trading of physical commodities in 2003, acquiring warehouses and charging for storage has been a nice profit maker. The banks are charged with failing to fill orders from customerspromptly, causing delays that then force those customers — who already own the aluminum in the warehouse — to buy the metal on the spot market from producers like Alcoa Inc. (NYSE: AA) and Rio Tinto PLC (NYSE: RIO).

Aluminum demand is expected to be strong in 2014. Top U.S. aluminum producerAlcoa (NYSE: AA  ) expects global demand growth of 7% and is projecting a deficit of 730,000 tons for the year. Alcoa expects the aerospace market to register the strongest growth in demand, followed by automotive.

Lastly, aluminum giant Alcoa (NYSE: AA  ) saw shares gain 2.3% as the materials sector soared higher today. Not only did Alcoa start the earnings season off on Monday with better-than-expected results, but Bernanke's comments yesterday sparked demand in the metals market. With the dollar weakening on news of continuing easing efforts, metals prices rose as investors put their money elsewhere. Not a single stock in the Dow ended the day in the red.

On September 28, 2011, CTI announced that a second independent radiology assessment of response and progression endpoint data from its PIX301 clinical trial of Pixuvri was achieved with statistical significance. The results of the EXTEND trial met its primary endpoint and showed that patients randomized to treatment with Pixuvri achieved a significantly higher rate of confirmed and unconfirmed complete response compared to patients treated with standard chem! otherapy had a significantly increased overall response rate and experienced a statistically significant improvement in median progression free survival. Pixuvri had predictable and manageable toxicities when administered at the proposed dose and schedule in the EXTEND clinical trial in heavily pre-treated patients. In March 2011, the Company initiated the PIX-R trial to study Pixuvri in combination with rituximab in patients with relapsed/refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). In November 2010, results were presented by the Brown University Oncology Group from a phase II trial of OPAXIO combined with temozolomide (TMZ), and radiotherapy in patients with newly-diagnosed, high-grade gliomas, a type of brain cancer. The trial demonstrated a high rate of complete and partial responses and a high rate of six month progression free survival (PFS). Based on these results, the Brown University Oncology Group has initiated a randomized, multicenter, phase II study of OPAXIO and standard radiotherapy versus TMZ and radiotherapy for newly diagnosed patients with glioblastoma with an active gene termed MGMT that reduces responsiveness to TMZ. A phase I/II study of OPAXIO combined with radi! otherapy ! and cisplatin was initiated by SUNY Upstate Medical University, in patients with locally advanced head and neck cancer.

Like it or not, all good things must come to an end.... even for a red hot stock like Cell Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ:CTIC). Yes, CTIC is up 111% since the end of 2013, up 14% today alone, and it doesn't look like the bulls have any reason to slow down now. That's exactly why now's the time for current shareholders to be afraid, however - expect it when you least expect it.

Top 10 Integrated Utility Stocks For 2014: Ellington Financial LLC (EFC)

Ellington Financial LLC (EFC) is a specialty finance company, which specializes in acquiring and managing mortgage-related assets. As of December 31, 2011, its targeted assets included residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS), backed by prime jumbo, Alternative A-paper (Alt-A), manufactured housing and subprime residential mortgage loans (non-Agency RMBS); RMBS for which the principal and interest payments are guaranteed by a United States Government agency or a United States Government-sponsored entity (Agency RMBS); mortgage-related derivatives; commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS), commercial mortgage loans and other commercial real estate debt, and corporate debt and equity securities and derivatives. It also acquires and manages other types of mortgage-related assets and financial assets, such as residential whole mortgage loans, asset-backed securities (ABS), backed by consumer and commercial assets, non-mortgage-related derivatives and real property.

Non-Agency RMBS

The Company acquires non-Agency RMBS backed by prime jumbo, Alt-A, manufactured housing and subprime residential mortgage loans. Its non-Agency RMBS holdings include investment-grade and non-investment grade classes. Non-Agency RMBS are debt obligations issued by private originators of or investors in residential mortgage loans. Non-Agency RMBS are issued as CMOs and are backed by pools of whole mortgage loans or by mortgage pass-through certificates. Non-Agency RMBS are securitized in senior/subordinated structures, or in excess spread/over-collateralization structures. In senior/subordinated structures, the subordinated tranches absorb all losses on the underlying mortgage loans before any losses are borne by the senior tranches.

Agency RMBS

The Company assets in this asset class consist of whole pool pass-through certificates, the principal and interest of which are guaranteed by Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae), Federal Home Loan Mortgage Cor! poration (Freddie Mac), or Government National Mortgage Association (Ginnie Mae), and which are backed by adjustable rate mortgages (ARMs), hybrid ARMs or fixed-rate mortgages. Mortgage pass-through certificates are securities representing undivided interests in pools of mortgage loans secured by real property where payments of both interest and principal, plus pre-paid principal, on the securities are made monthly to holders of the security, in effect passing through monthly payments made by the individual borrowers on the mortgage loans that underlie the securities, net of fees paid to the issuer/guarantor and servicers of the securities. Whole pool pass-through certificates are mortgage pass-through certificates that represent the entire ownership of a pool of mortgage loans.

In addition to investing in specific pools of Agency RMBS, the Company utilizes forward-settling purchases and sales of Agency RMBS where the underlying pools of mortgage loans are to be announced mortgage-backed securities (MBS) (TBAs). Pursuant to these TBA transactions, it agrees to purchase or sell, for future delivery, Agency RMBS with certain principal and interest terms and certain types of underlying collateral. It uses TBAs for hedging purposes. It engages in TBA transactions for purposes of managing certain risks associated with its long Agency RMBS and its non-Agency RMBS.

Mortgage-Related Derivatives

The Company takes long and short positions in various mortgage-related derivative instruments, including credit default swaps. A credit default swap is a credit derivative contract in which one party (the protection buyer) pays an ongoing periodic premium (and often an upfront payment as well) to another party (the protection seller) in return for compensation for default (or similar credit event) by a reference entity. In this case, the reference entity can be an individual MBS or an index of several MBS, such as an ABX Index, PrimeX or a CMBX Index.

CMBS

CMBS ar! e mortgage-backed securities collateralized by loans on commercial properties. CMBS issued are fixed rate securities backed by fixed rate loans made to multiple borrowers on a range of property types, though single-borrower CMBS and floating-rate CMBS have also been issued. Commercial mortgage loans are loans secured by liens on commercial properties, including retail, office, industrial, hotel and multifamily properties. Commercial real estate loans may also be structured into more complicated senior/subordinate structures, including those providing for multiple B-Note or multiple mezzanine loan senior/subordinate components.

Corporate Debt and Equity Securities and Derivatives

For hedging purposes, the Company takes short positions in corporate debt and equity (including indices on corporate debt and equity) by entering into derivative contracts, such as credit default swaps, total return swaps and options. These hedges reference corporations (such as financial institutions that have substantial mortgage-related exposure) or indices whose performance has a degree of correlation with the performance of its portfolio. Given this correlation, a short position with respect to such corporations or indices provides a hedge to its portfolio of MBS as a whole.

Other Assets

The Company from time to time acquires other mortgage-related and financial assets, which include residential whole mortgage loans, ABS backed by consumer and commercial assets and real property. It also acquires real property interests, such as single family and multifamily residential properties.

SAN FRANCISCO A mysterious four-story barge floating near Treasure Island here has people wondering what Google is up to.

A local TV station and CNET offer two theories behind the contents of the boat, which is stacked with shipping containers.

CBS-affiliate KPIX, citing an unnamed source close to the project, says Google is constructing an Apple Store-like marketing center for Google Glass.

CNET says it might be a water-based data center, citing a patent filed by Google for such a thing in 2007.

Google had no comment.

A barge similar to the one in San Francisco is in the waters off Portland, Maine.

The search giant plans to have the barge towed to San Francisco's nearby Fort Mason, where it will be open to the public, the unnamed source told KPIX.

CNET, quoting an anonymous source identified as an independent marine engineer, says Google wants to build a backup data center in the event of a natural disaster. The barge in San Francisco would be one of a dozen data centers worldwide, the source said.

Photronics, Inc. was founded in 1969 and is headquartered in Brookfield, Connecticut.

Advisors' Opinion:

In the table below, we've listed a sample of small-cap semiconductor capital equipment stocks such as Entegris (ENTG), Advanced Energy Industries (AEIS), ATMI Inc. (ATMI), MKS Instruments (MKSI), Photronics Inc. (PLAB), Rudolph Technologies (RTEC),FormFactor (FORM) and Mattson Technology (MTSN). The peers trade at approximately 1.0x and 15.5x 2014E revenues and EPS, respectively. Furthermore, the average peer trades at 2.1x tangible book value. However, these multiples are based on average 2014E industry revenue and earnings growth of 18% and 119%, respectively. Axcelis is poised to grow at a rate substantially above the industry average.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

My first earnings short-squeeze trade idea is photomasks maker Photronics (PLAB), which is set to release numbers on Tuesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Photronics to report revenue of $106.05 million on earnings of 8 cents per share.

About a month ago, Needham downgraded shares of Photronics to hold from buy following the company's negative preannouncement. Needham anticipates that Photronics will face some near-term challenges and may not generate EPS over 80 cents per share until fiscal year 2015.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float Photronics is pretty high at 11.9%. That means that out of the 59.69 million shares in the tradable float, 7.38 million shares are sold short by the bears. This is a high short interest on a stock with a relatively low float. Any bullish earnings news could easily spark a large short-squeeze for shares of PLAB post-earnings.

From a technical perspective, PLAB is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been uptrending over the last three months and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $7.03 to its recent high of $8.89 a share. During that uptrend, shares of PLAB have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of PLAB within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade post-earnings.

If you're bullish on PLAB, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $8.74 to its 52-week high at $8.89 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 212,683 shares. If that breakout hits, then PLAB will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move a

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Tim Melvin]

Once again, rather than making a wish on burning match bets, I prefer to buy out of favor companies at a steep discount to their asset and business value. And alook at the silver miners shows deep discounts to the value of corporate assets that could lead to significant profits.

Pan American Silver (PAAS) trades at just 65% of book value and has fallen by about 75% over the past few years. Couer Mines (CDE) is fetching just 54% of book and has fallen by around 80% since 2006. Silver Standard Resources (SSRI) trades at 55% of book and for less than the value of the cash the company has in the bank.

In reality, silver just needs to stop falling in price for these stocks to start to recover. If the analysts are right and silver hits a new high in the next decade, these could easily be the best investments you ever make in your lifetime.

  • [By STANSBERRYRESEARCH]  Let me start today's essay with an admission...   I have no idea what the price of gold will be by the end of the year. Of course, neither does anyone else.   I've recommended owning gold and silver bullion for many years. My company began recommending it repeatedly in the early 2000s because we saw the government's efforts to weaken the dollar as a bullish sign for gold prices.   Then in 2006, I began to see that we were inevitably heading for a currency crisis. These weak-dollar policies had continued for far too long and were joined by huge increases to both public and private debts. That's when I began warning about the ultimate loss of our dollar's world reserve currency status, something I've called the "End of America."    So for nearly seven years, I've been telling people that, whether gold looked expensive or not, it was prudent... or even necessary... to own some as insurance. I still believe that's true. I personally own gold. I've never sold a single ounce.   I hold gold because I believe the entire global system of paper money and central banking is in the process of self-destructing. And I believe in a relatively short time – perhaps five or 10 years – the existing monetary system will collapse. During this period of turmoil, I expect gold and silver will maintain their purchasing power, while all forms of paper money will be rendered worthless.   I see gold as a form of savings... a universally recognized form of money that is no one else's liability. In that way, it is far superior to any other form of money currently available today.    At the same time... I am fully aware that as the public's awareness of the risks associated with our paper-money system grow, volatility in gold prices will spike. Worse, I knew that as the public began to invest in gold, the likelihood increased for a wicked

Apple’s Handheld TV, and All the Other Video Devices

How big does a  smartphone or tablet screen have to be before it can be considered a TV? Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) apparently will test an iPhone with a six-inch screen, according to The Wall Street Journal. However, it is not a tablet, at least as far as the traditional definition of tablets goes. A small step up in size, RCA makes a 13.3 inch television screen. The breadth of screen sizes opens the question of what is a smartphone, a tablet or a TV, and what some can watch based on their deteriorating vision.

Does the screen size debate matter? Yes, to the extent of what people are willing to do with a device. It is assumed that a smartphone is portable enough to carry in a pocket, probably. And a tablet has to fit in a brief case or backpack, perhaps. A television is a free-standing device that has to go on a stand or on a wall, or be suspended by wire from a ceiling.

Another question about screen size is what people will do with a device, what will they use it for? New wearable watches may have screens too small to view anything but video clips. Tablet screens may be too small to watch some HD programs. TVs are bolted-down devices, no matter how well they display video content.

10 Best Energy Stocks To Own For 2015

The consumer electronics industry still makes distinctions that may be false, at least as far as many consumers are concerned. That cracks open the door to whether definition matters in a world in which the utility of screen size is more a matter of what content it can play and the extent to which the display is acceptable to consumers.

It may be that the only line of demarcation left in the spectrum from video watches to televisions is price. Perhaps consumers believe that the larger the screen, the more they will need to pay. That line has been blurred, too. Philips makes a 32-inch screen that retails for $450 (used) on Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN). As a matter for fact, Amazon may be the largest warehouse of video devices. It sells the tiny Samsung Rugby III handset and television screens of more than 70 inches.

The line between video viewing devices already has disappeared to the point where size matters less and less. The definition probably is based on whether consumers believe that labels mean anything as video devices grow bother larger and smaller. Perhaps the line that gets drawn is based on age. People older than 65 own televisions in greater numbers than smartphones. However, for older people, the definition may not matter either. They just cannot see small screens as their vision gets worse. Otherwise, they might want that six-inch screen iPhone just like everyone else does.

Next Inning Scores in Tech Sector

Top 10 High Tech Stocks For 2015

Paul McWilliams, editor of Next Inning and a self-described nerd walks us through the complexities of analyzing tech stocks, and highlights some favorite bets on broadband.

Steve Halpern: We're here today with Paul McWilliams, editor of Next Inning. Unlike many in the advisory community who focus on all types of stocks, you've developed an industry-leading expertise in one sector—technology. Could you tell us a bit about your background and your attraction to technology?

Paul McWilliams: Well, I guess you could say I'm a bit of a nerd. I grew up in the tech sector running a tech company for 20 years; but as much as I love technology, what really interests me is the study of business models.

Steve Halpern: And one of the places that interested readers could see about these business models is, every quarter you compile a special report called the State of Tech in which you provide an in-depth analysis of some 70 different stocks. It's probably the most ambitious project I've ever seen in the advisory world. Can you tell us about this report?

Paul McWilliams: Oh, thank you for your kind words. The State of Tech is a challenging endeavor, but that's what makes it worthwhile.

State of Tech is designed to help readers audit their thinking and adjust their strategy for the upcoming earning season, which is when stock prices tend to make their biggest moves during the year.

In our July 1 edition, which ran a total of 160 pages, I covered, as you mentioned, 70 tech companies that participate in sectors ranging from semiconductor wafer fabrication to finished goods. The report covers all the mega-cap companies like Apple and Cisco, as well as a number of small and micro-cap companies.

Advancements in technology are generally enabled at the front end of the tech food chain and then implemented by companies in the back of the food chain.

If we understand this process from womb to tomb as I say, we can more accurately spot the companies along the food chain that are likely to benefit, and the companies that are likely to be disrupted.

However, that just gives us a place to start. From there, we need to dissect the business models of the various companies.

Steve Halpern: Is that why you dedicate so much of your efforts to a fundamental evaluation?

Paul McWilliams: Yes, a lot of investors are either intimidated by a fundamental evaluation or they use short-cut formulas that often lead to bad decisions.

What successful investors look for are pricing mistakes caused by these bad decisions. Fundamental data doesn't need to be intimidating.

Prior to moving to the finance side of the business, I spent 20 years as a CEO of a tech company that I founded and subsequently sold. When I ran the company, I learned about the fundamental data and more importantly, what drives changes in the data.

What investors need to spot are the unexpected changes. In other words, changes that are not included in the price of a stock.

While a very large percentage of my readers are professionals who run hedge funds, or mutual funds, or private investment groups, I take a lot of time explaining the fundamental data for companies in the industry sectors so that even the average person on the street can understand what makes a given business model tick, and with that, what might change its course.

In State of Tech, the first 45 pages are dedicated mostly to fundamental data and the accompanying explanations of what it means and why it's important.

In the 100 or so pages that follow, I provide company-by-company specific commentary that explains how I think the model will work out going forward and what I think the stock is really worth.

Steve Halpern: What sort of data do you focus on?

Paul McWilliams: In addition to the basic data you'll find most everywhere, I provide a level of detail you won't find on financial websites that helps readers better understand the core valuation.

Some of the more unique evaluations I present include free cash flow evaluations relative to tracked earnings. Warren Buffet calls this "owner's earnings." Another unique data point I call operational leverage ratio.

Steve Halpern: Can you explain what that is and why it's important?

Paul McWilliams: Operational leverage, the ratio that I call operational leverage, shows the number of gross profit dollars a company earns from each dollar it invests in operational expenses. This is important for many reasons. It tells us how well senior management is investing its resources.

It's also one of the very few pieces of trailing data that has reasonably good predictive value for future results.

Steve Halpern: With all of this data as a background, where are you choosing to invest today?

Paul McWilliams: Well, I'm allocating my risk budget in a number of places. I've actually got a fairly widespread of bets on the table right now and I disclose those openly to Next Inning readers.

Since time's running short, let's focus on one paradigm I think we can all agree will play out favorably going forward.

I think we can predict with reasonable certainty that the world has a nearly insatiable appetite for bandwidth. What's interesting here is companies at the front end of the food chain have only recently delivered the tools that can economically enable the delivery of the bandwidth in services that we all crave.

A lot of investors think tech companies can deliver solutions almost instantly, and then wonder, why did my investment not pan out so quickly? This simply isn't how it works in tech. Even in industries that have short design and product cycles, it takes several generations to deliver what consumers really want.

Look at smartphones we see today versus what we saw three years ago. It simply couldn't happen overnight. In some sectors, the puzzle's very complex and it also depends on capital spending cycles. In the bandwidth deployment story, we've seen a little bit of both. We're waiting for the right technology and waiting for the capital spending cycle.

What we're seeing now, however, is both factors are coming together and there will be a bunch of companies that benefit from the conversions.

Steve Halpern: Would you be kind enough to talk about a couple of those companies for us?

Paul McWilliams: Oh, yeah. Let's touch on just a couple of them really quickly. First off, there's Finisar (FNSR). Finisar is a world leader in fiber optic components and substances. It's not as big as JDSU in revenue, but half of JDSU is capital equipment. So, it doesn't compete with Finisar.

Finisar operates with a business model that carries a high fixed cost. This is where studying a business model is really important. A high fixed cost business model means it takes a certain amount of revenue to overcome the fixed cost; but after that, the marginal profit, or the profit on the next dollar of sales, is very high.

I pointed to this fact last year when some misdirected analysts were rating Finisar as a sell and the stock was trading in very, very low double digits.

Since then, we've seen the outlook for Finisar improve significantly and at its recent peak, the stock was priced at more than twice where I suggested entering it. It has since fallen back a little bit too where I think it's at a really good point to accumulate shares now.

Steve Halpern: There's a second company that you said was interesting?

Paul McWilliams: Oh, absolutely. Another company that most investors probably have never heard of is a tiny little Israeli semiconductor company named EZChip (EZCH).

EZChip absolutely dominates the world of Layer II and Layer III network processing used in edge routing applications. This all sounds pretty geek to most people I'm sure, but I explain it in pedestrian-level detail in my reports.

The installation of high-performance edge routing is going to be the focus for the current capital spending cycle. According to forecasts and the results we've seen from EZChip customers like Cisco, demand should continue to accelerate substantially going forward.

I think Cisco reported, oh, 60% year-over-year increase in sales for their ASR 9000 edge router, which is totally dependent on EZChip's Layer II and III solution.

However, for some strange reason, analysts think EZChip is directly threatened in its core markets by companies like Broadcom and Marvell.

I've studied the sector and the offerings from Broadcom and Marvell closely and I think these analysts are wrong. EZChip trading below $30 is an easy buy.

There are a lot more of these stories that we can cover, but time's running a little bit short; and if your readers are interested, they can always check out the website and take a look at our free trial offer.

Steve Halpern: Well, I'd encourage them to do that. I'm always fascinated reading your reports. You do an incredible job and I'd really like to thank you for joining us today.

Paul McWilliams: Well, thank you, Steve. I appreciate your time.

10 Best Trucking Stocks To Buy Right Now

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- From the dairy farm on the edge of Genesee County, N.Y., launching a multimillion dollar milk separation project to cater to the needs of two new yogurt plants, to the refrigerated trucking companies hauling yogurt around the Northeast, the yogurt boom has had quite a ripple effect and promises to grow more.

"Our last two years have been the biggest commitment of capital in our history," said Larry Webster, CEO of Upstate Niagara Cooperative, which is supplying the milk to both Alpina Foods' and M眉ller Quaker Dairy's yogurt plants.

Webster won't say exactly how much capital he's talking about, but the investment includes buying a yogurt plant in the northern part of New York state and expanding its western New York plants. Upstate is also an owner of O-At-Ka Milk Products Cooperative, which has expanded its Batavia, N.Y., plant, too.

  • [By Vanina Egea]

A few companies excel over their market peers, granting them an unconventional competitive advantage. Everybody knows the market leaders, or the mammoth companies, but there are other particular services that can give a firm greater exposure. No other example is more relevant than the rotary rig count offered by Baker Hughes (BIH). The Baker Hughes Rig Counts provides a weekly count of U.S. and Canadian drilling activity to the industry since 1944, and has become an important business barometer for the drilling industry and its suppliers. Most importantly, the index allows industry analysts to identify industry trends, while providing valuable information to prospect investors beyond Baker Hughes itself. After experiencing a decline in performance from mid-2011 to the end of 2012, the company saw great improvement in overall performance during 2013. Can the trend be expected to continue?

Advisors' Opinion:

In possibly related news, shares of a Danone sometimes-partner, sometimes-rival in the drinkable yogurt market, kefir-maker Lifeway Foods (NASDAQ: LWAY  ) , is seeing its shares come under pressure Tuesday. Specializing in grocery sales, Lifeway also operates a chain of yogurt-inspired restaurants of its own known as "Starfruit Cafe." As Danone shares gain 0.5%, Lifeway is down 4.5%.

Once the budget impasse is wrapped up though, a new Dairy Stabilization Act should be right around the corner. That’s good news for a small-cap company like dairy farm Lifeway Foods (LWAY), which saw its shares fall nearly 25% over the course of August and September when the budget impasse was shaping up.

  • [By Lisa Levin]

Dairy Products: This industry tumbled 2.12% by 10:50 am. The worst stock within the industry was Lifeway Foods (NASDAQ: LWAY), which fell 0.9%. Lifeway Foods' PEG ratio is 3.56.

Shares of Lifeway Foods (NASDAQ: LWAY  ) are on a tear, up nearly a full $1 (or 8.3%) since reporting earnings last week. But is the price spike justified? Let's find out.

10 Best Trucking Stocks To Buy Right Now: Opt-Sciences Corp (OPST)

Opt-Sciences Corporation, incorporated on November 1956, conducts its business through its wholly owned subsidiary, O and S Research, Inc. The Company deposits anti-glare and/or transparent conductive optical coatings on glass used primarily to cover instrument panels in aircraft cockpits. It also provides full glass cutting, grinding and painting operations, which augment its optical coating capabilities. Its products are designed to enable pilots to read aircraft instruments in direct sunlight or at night or in covert situations using appropriate night vision filters or to protect the instruments from electromagnetic interference. The Company business is dependent on a robust commercial, business, and regional aircraft market and to a lesser degree the military aircraft market. It generally has a four to twelve week delivery cycle depending on product complexity, available plant capacity and required lead time for specialty raw materials, such as polarizers or filter glass.

The Company offers incorporate an optical coating of some type. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Geoff Gannon] ng>Micropac

Micropac is 76% owned by Heinz-Werner Hempel. He a German businessman. You can see the German company he founded here. He had control of Micropac for a long-time. I don have an exact number in front of me. But I would guess it been something like 25 years.

    ADDvantage

ADDvantage Technologies is controlled by the Chymiak brothers. See the company April 4 press release explaining their decision to turn over the CEO position to an outsider. Regardless, the Chymiaks still control 47% of the company. Ken Chymiak is now chairman. And David Chymiak is still a director and now the company chief technology officer. Clearly, it still their company.

By the way, the name ADDvantage Technologies has nothing to do with the Chymiaks. Today AEY really traces its roots to a private company called Tulsat. The Chymiak brothers acquired that company about 27 years ago. So, effectively, when you buy shares of AEY you are buying into a 27-year-old family-controlled company.

That pretty typical in the world of net-nets.

    Solitron

Solitron Devices is 29% owned by Shevach Saraf. He has been the CEO for 20 years. The post-bankruptcy Solitron has never known another CEO. Before the bankruptcy, Solitron was a much bigger, much different company. So even though we are not talking about the founder here and even though 70% of the company shares are not held by the CEO wee still talking about a company where one person has a lot of control. Solitron only has three directors. Saraf is the chairman, CEO, president, CFO and treasurer. Neither of the other two directors joined the board within the last 15 years. So, we aren talking about a lot of tumult at the top.

In fact, profitable net-nets seem to be especially common candidates for abandoning the responsibilities of a public company without actually getting taken private.

Advisors' Opinion:

The prospects for PPL's respective businesses differ greatly. On one hand, the regulated utility business has been doing very well, with new base rates in its Pennsylvania and Kentucky markets helping drive profits higher in its most recent quarter. U.K.-based results were also strong, as the environment across the Atlantic has been relatively benign lately. U.K. rival National Grid (NYSE: NGG  ) has also seen exceptional results in its own British operations as it leverages the competitive moat that being a major regulated utility gives it in the market there. For PPL, more than half its earnings come from the U.K. division.

    Weathering the storm
I attended the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions' launch event for its new report, "Weathering the Storm: Building Business Resilience to Climate Change". Representatives from American Water Works (NYSE: AWK  ) , Entergy (NYSE: ETR  ) , and National Grid (NYSE: NGG  ) were among the speakers. All of them talked about significant financial losses from recent extreme weather events, service disruption, weakening infrastructure, and the need for their industry to transform if it is to be effective in the decades to come.
