Global equity markets continued their ascent during the second quarter of 2013, with several major equity indices setting all-time highs during May. Momentum was then halted after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke warned that stimulus efforts would be tapered if the U.S. economy continued to strengthen. Clear signs of stress in the Chinese 铿ancial system and ongoing uncertainty over the implications of Japan's massive stimulus efforts added to investor fears. Equity markets corrected sharply before 铿ding solid footing during the 铿al days of June.
Despite this mid-quarter swoon, global equity markets, as measured by the MSCI World Index (C$) posted a 4.4% gain. The chart below illustrates the quarterly performance, expressed in Canadian dollars, of some notable equity indices from around the world:

During this past quarter the relative strength in U.S. markets continued to be apparent as the 6.5% gain in the S&P 500 Index (C$) signi铿antly outpaced the returns of most other regions.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Rich Duprey]
Medical device and branded generics makerAbbott (NYSE: ABT ) announced today its third-quarter dividend of $0.14 per share, the same rate it's paid for the past two quarters. Before that, the payout had been $0.51 per share, but on January 1Abbott spun off to investors its research-based pharmaceuticals business into a new company, AbbVie (NYSE: ABBV ) .

2013 has been a big year for Abbott Labs (NYSE: ABT ) . The company's charged ahead into its new post-pharmaceutical future, and today's earnings report marked the first time that investors had a chance to see how well Abbott's adapting to the radical shake-up. Fortunately, Abbott performed well: The company's earnings per share minus one-time items just topped analyst expectations, and sales grew 2% year-over-year. The pharmaceuticals spinoff took its toll on Abbott's net profit, but that was to be expected.

Drug manufacturer Abbott Laboratories (ABT) reported revenue growth that was below expectations due to its exposure to the slower growth economies in Europe and the emerging markets. Despite the recent weakness, Abbott is a high-quality company with shares that we believe to be attractively priced. In addition, its management team has a strong record of investing capital prudently.

AbbVie (NYSE: ABT ) is the only pure pharma in the Dividend Aristocrats club, which requires 25 consecutive years of dividend increases. The six-month-old company is in the index because it spun out of Abbott Labs (NYSE: ABT ) , which was in the index before the split. Even Abbott technically cut its dividend because it lost a substantial amount of its cash flow from AbbVie's drug. Still, I think the S&P let them stay in the indexsimply because there are so few health care companies in the Dividend Aristocrats.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By John Persinos]
One dominant company in the handling, treatment, and disposal of solid waste is Waste Management (WM). With this industry leader, investors are paying for market dominance, relative predictability, good dividends, and high cash flow.

He is avoiding Apple (AAPL) and IPOs, as they remind him of 1983, the year he learned the beauty of boring when blue chips such as Waste Management (WM) and Pepsico (PEP) were stumbling and selling cheap, while 30 glitzy PC stocks went public and soared. Since then, the blue chips have overcome their problems and rose in value again, and most of the PC companies are gone.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Zacks Investment Research]
It is hard to find a good play in the Zacks Industry of mining non-ferrous metals, as the industry currently has a rank of 247 out of 261. In fact, in our five mining industries, there are only two No. 1-Ranked stocks: Brigus Gold (BRD) and Impala (IMPUY.PK). Both of these are in struggling industries, but they have proven to be best-in-class thanks to improving earnings estimates. Plus, both have seen their ranks surge from holds (or worse) up to strong buy territory, suggesting either of these names might be better picks than the struggling SCCO at this time.
