Top 10 Cheap Companies For 2014

LONDON --The FTSE 100 has risen by 25% over the last year, and many top shares are beginning to look quite expensive.

I'm on the hunt for companies that still look cheap, based on their long-term earnings potential. To help me hunt down these bargains, I'm using a special version of the price to earnings ratio called the PE10, which is one of my favorite tools for value investing.

The PE10 compares the current share price with average earnings per share for the last ten years. This smoothes out any short-term volatility and lets you see whether a company looks cheap compared to its long-term earnings.

Today, I'm going to take a look at the PE10 forRSA Insurance Group (LSE: RSA  )

Is RSA Insurance Group a buy?
RSA's share price has dropped by nearly 20% since February, when the firm announced a 33% cut to its final dividend, and said that the interim dividend would also be cut by a similar percentage.

However, despite the cuts, RSA's prospective dividend yield of 5.3% is still one of the highest in the FTSE 100 -- so is it a buy?

Advisors' Opinion:

Since the start of the week, small cap nuclear fuel stock USEC Inc (NYSE: USU) more than doubled for investors, something that has not happened for investors in uranium stocks like Uranium Resources, Inc (NASDAQ: URRE), Denison Mines Corp (NYSEMKT: DNN), Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT: URG) and Uranerz Energy Corp (NYSEMKT: URZ). To recap: USEC Inc closed at the $6 level on Friday, but then it surged to the $15 level on Monday only to open at the $10 level on Tuesday when it ultimately closed at $12.46. So what in the world is going on with USEC Inc and is it time to revisit nuclear fuel and uranium stocks?

  • [By James E. Brumley]

Well, I'll give myself an A for effort, but a C- for timing. But, I can bump that C- up to a B+ if my intuition is right as we head into the last few days of 2013 and the first few of 2014. What I'm talking about is a bullish commentary I penned back on November 26th regarding Uranerz Energy Corp. (NYSEMKT:URZ), Uranium Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ:URRE), and Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT:URG). All three stocks were perking up, and more than that, the buzz surrounding URG, URRE, and URZ was getting louder. More often than not, when the fervor and bullish action and chatter reaches the levels they had reached a month ago, an explosion is right around the corner.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

If you listened to my bullish calls from December 27th and/or February 24th about Uranerz Energy Corp. (NYSEMKT:URZ), Uranium Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ:URRE), and Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT:URG), then congratulations - you're now up as much as 50%, depending on when you stepped into a trade, and which stock you chose. Now get out. See, as well as URZ and URG have done and are doing (URRE not so much), it looks like the short-term rally I first spotted a little more than a couple of months ago has fully run its course, and now these names are setting up a pullback.

Advisors' Opinion:

It's hard for any company to raise prices in the current non-inflationary environment. But it's especially hard right now for operators of fast food restaurants, given the intense price competition in a very crowded marketplace. McDonald's sales growth in recent quarters has been driven by the success of its Dollar Menu, so raising prices in that segment are a big deal for the company. In addition, pushback from franchisees who say they can't afford to refurbish their stores, given higher charges from McDonald's hits at one of McDonald's key advantages in its market—it's ability to refresh stores more frequently than competitors. A McDonald's refresh at $600,000 on average, according to the company, costs substantially more than a remodel at Burger King (BKW) at $300,000 or Wendy's (WEN) at $375,000 for the least expensive version. McDonald's restaurants average $2.5 million in annual sales.

For investors looking for exposure to the US commonwealth of Puerto Rico, banking stocks Doral Financial Corp (NYSE: DRL), First Bancorp (NYSE: FBP), OFG Bancorp (NYSE: OFG) and Popular Inc (NASDAQ: BPOP) offer the best bet as these Puerto Rico stocks trade on major US exchanges rather than the OTC. However, it should be mentioned that there has been a slowdown in Puerto Rico economy which has also shrunk in five of the past seven fiscal years. Then lastFebruary, Puerto Rico debt was cut to speculative grade by the three largest credit-rating companies whileGovernor Alejandro Garcia Padilla has proposed a series of budget cuts to help tackle the island mounting debt load -including the freezing public workerssalaries and the closing about 100 schools.

Popular Inc.(BPOP), Puerto Rico’s largest bank, said Wednesday that regulators approved its plan to repay the $935 million rescue package it received during the financial crisis. Popular was the U.S. government’s largest remaining crisis-era bailout after auto-lender Ally Financial Inc.(ALLY), which has paid back more than the $17.2 billion bailout it received during the financial crisis as a result of going public in April.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Walgreen (NYSE: WAG  ) will release its quarterly report on Friday, and investors have been pleased with the drugstore chain's success lately, bidding its shares to all-time record highs within the past month. Yet with Rite Aid (NYSE: RAD  ) having risen from the ashes to become profitable and with CVS Caremark (NYSE: CVS  ) still posing a big obstacle to Walgreen's dominance of the industry, the question investors are asking is whether Walgreen earnings can keep up the pace.

Things never get dull for the country's lone satellite-radio provider. Shares of Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI  ) moved sharply higher on the week, climbing 10% to close at $3.72. The media darling's gain was well ahead of the general market.

  • [By Jeff Reeves]

Satellite providerSirius XM Radio(SIRI) was in a tough spot last year as terrestrial radio remained entrenched and streamingInternet radio from companies likePandora Media(P) and continued to gain momentum. But don’t count out Sirius XM.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

As if Sirius XM Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:SIRI) shareholders didn't have enough to worry about already today, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) have managed to make things worse.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Vanin Aegea]

The electronic components industry is one of the many industries hit by the economic recession. Growth for the short- and mid-term is very well limited by smaller disposable incomes. With a recovering economy, and the introduction of new technologies during the last decade, prospects for Emerson Electric (EMR) and Corning (GLW) defy a weak environment. Whether profits are on the way is the subject at hand. Let take a closer look.

  • [By David Sterman]

We can glean a few clear trends from these share buybackers:

The majority of these plans are simply new plans to replace old plans that have now been completed, meaning these companies buy back their shares on a regular basis. Many of these stocks are valued right near the market multiple of 15 to 16 times projected earnings. Many of these stocks offer up a decent dividend as well, boosting their total cash return to shareholders. Most of these buyback programs represent a meaningful amount of the current share count. (Both VMWare's (NYSE: VMW) and Emerson Electric's (NYSE: EMR) buyback programs are not really meaningful as they are only likely large enough to offset stock option grants). Most of these stocks are near their 52-week highs, extending the theme of the current era that companies no longer wait for their stock to fall out of bed before buying back stock. Nor do any of these stocks trade below tangible book value, which also had historically served as a key litmus test of buyback efficacy.

Still, the longer-term buyback programs for some of these firms have surely been impressive. Take toy maker Hasbro (NYSE: HAS) as an example. The company's new $500 million share buyback (which would reduce the share count by 11% at current prices) is reasonably impressive -- until you look at what Hasbro has already been doing for nearly a decade.
