Advisors' Opinion:- [By Maxx Chatsko]
Merck (NYSE: MRK ) hasn't done a bad job fighting the patent cliff in recent years. When it comes to developing generic biologic drugs, or biosimilars, the company finds itself in a much less envious position. Some of the problem can to be owed to the fact that Merck didn't quite know where to start. It seemed to be forging ahead without a clear plan. The company established a subsidiary called Merck BioVentures to focus on biosimilar development only to absorb it back into larger operations. That forced high profile hires such as Mike Kamarck to leave the company, led to the cancellation of at least one therapy, and left shareholders questioning what the heck Merck was doing.

Merck provides essential healthcare products to consumers, animals, and companies around the world. The company reported fourth quarter earnings that fell short of estimates. The stock been in an up-and-down trend over the past few quarters, but is currently surging higher. Earnings and revenue figures have been rising over the last four quarters, which has left investors optimistic about recent earnings announcements. Relative to its peers and sector, Merck has been a relative year-to-date performance leader. Look for Merck to OUTPERFORM.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Caplinger]
UnitedHealth (NYSE: UNH ) also fell, losing 0.9% on the same day that rival Aetna (NYSE: AET ) reported earnings. Aetna managed to increase its earnings by keeping premium prices high and cutting its costs, and it's positioning itself to deal with the onset of health exchanges and other key provisions of Obamacare that will take effect within the next year. But what's increasingly clear is that competition among health insurance carriers will become fierce as Obamacare is increasingly implemented, and UnitedHealth needs to defend its leadership position by getting its plans onto as many health exchanges as possible without cutting profit margins any further than the new health-care law will require.
