Raytheon Company, together with its subsidiaries, provides electronics, mission systems integration, and other capabilities in the areas of sensing, effects, and command, control, communications, and intelligence systems, as well as mission support services in the United States and internationally. It operates in six segments: Integrated Defense Systems, Intelligence and Information Systems, Missile Systems, Network Centric Systems, Space and Airborne Systems, and Technical Services. The Integrated Defense Systems segment provides integrated naval, air, and missile defense and civil security response solutions.   Plus, following the unsuccessful missile test, it's become clear that more needs to be done to make sure that the U.S. has effective ballistics missile interceptors. That's great news for defense contractors. Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC  ) , for one, is the prime contractor on the Missile Defense Agency's Joint National Integration Center, a simulating and war-gaming center that provides answers for America's missile defense capabilities. Boeing makes ground-based interceptors. And Raytheon (NYSE: RTN  ) builds the SM-3, a defense weapon used to destroy incoming ballistic missiles.

  So much for Raytheon's (NYSE: RTN  ) big contract win.

  Eleven days ago, the Pentagon gave Raytheon investors a big shot in the arm, announcing it had awarded a $279 million contract to replace Exelis's aging ALQ-99 "tactical jamming" (electronic warfare) equipment aboard EA-18G Growler and EA-6B Prowler aircraft with a new system of Raytheon's devising. But now, the company that Raytheon beat out to win this contract is making waves.

  As already mentioned, 30 contractors are named as recipients, from well-known contractor names such as Booz Allen Hamilton (NYSE: BAH  ) , General Dynamics (NYSE: GD  ) , Honeywell (NYSE: HON  ) , Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT  ) , and Raytheon (NYSE: RTN  ) , all the way down to small businesses with names like PrimeTech International, Metrostar Systems, and Tatitlek Training Services. It is divided into three groupings, with some of the work reserved for section 8(a) Small Businesses and other work only for Reserved Small Business. But the majority of the work is considered "unrestricted," and up for bidding by 19 of the 30 firms named.

  Although no other defense or aerospace contractors had announced any layoffs or f! urloughs ! due to the government shutdown, the Aerospace Industries Association said last Friday that “tens of thousands” of employees at member companies would have to be furloughed if the shutdown continued. The group includes defense firms Northrop Grumman Corp. (NYSE: NOC), Raytheon Co. (NYSE: RTN) and General Dynamics Corp. (NYSE: GD) among its membership. None of these firms had announced plans to idle workers.
