Activist investors have garnered increasing attention, as they try to bend health-care company management to focus on maximizing shareholder value. These proxy fights are important for investors, especially in biotech, where buyouts are the preferred outcome to many holdings.
The success of Carl Icahn's years-long campaign agitating Forest Labs resulted in a successful takeover by generic drugmaker Actavis. Icahn deservedly crowed about a deal that caused a one-day 28% pop, and ended his time as a shareholder with roughly $1.7 billion in net gains. Investors who jumped in following Icahn's initial investment would have seen three-bagger returns.
In this segment from Market Checkup, The Motley Fool's health-care focused investing show, analyst David Williamson dives into the activist investortrend, highlights recent successes and ongoing fights, and explains why investors need to watch this action carefully.

Most of the evidence supporting positions in SPY over QQQ can be seen in the earnings performance so far this season. In the S&P as a whole, roughly 3/4 of the reporting companies have posted results that are better than analyst estimates. When looking at revenues in isolation, slightly more than half of those companies have passed market projections. But these numbers would be much improved without the major earnings misses that have been seen in the large-cap tech space. Examples seen so far include Intel Corp.(INTL), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and, more recently, Google(GOOG), and Microsoft (MSFT).

American Campus Communities (ACC) made the grade after three insiders at the student housing REIT bought $186,800. Leading the charge was CFO Jonathan Graf, who bought 3,700 shares for $67,700. InsiderScore categorized this combined purchase as a luster Buying Unusual Eventand also notes that the purchases came after ACC released weak earnings and lowered its guidance.

American Campus Communities, Inc. (ACC), an owner, manager, and developer of student housing, decreased 15.2% in the third quarter as the company's lease rates were weaker than expected. Supply in some of its markets increased, and REITS were hurt in the third quarter from rising yields as the 10-year Treasury yield approached 3% and made dividend yields on many REITs less attractive. However, we continue to believe the company is the best in its industry at developing properties and should improve its yields next year as the market absorbs the excess supply. (David Baron)

The following chart takes a comparative look at some widely held ETFs/CEFs holding different types of bonds. The objective is to visualize not only how much these products cost, but also to break down the percent of total yield depleted by management fees. I define total yield as current annualized yield plus net fees - in other words the yield of the fund if there were no management fees attached. The funds we will examine are aforementioned BND, iShares 20+ Treasury Bond (TLT), iShares High-Yield Corporate (HYG), Nuveen Municipal Value (NUV), Eaton Vance Limited Duration (EVV) and Alliance Bernstein Global High-Yield (AWF).
